Weekly Update: Resin, Eclipse, Ink, Festival Prep, Tatting Tin

This week, I attempted to make some more pieces out of resin. I made more flowers to suspend within it, but while cleaning and finishing a few pieces, I realized that it takes far too long to make them nicely to be affordable. Not to mention the dangers of breathing in the particles, even after they’re cured.

I think I found a workable solution and have some parts ordered. Hopefully, that can be included in next week’s update.

The next big thing I did over this week was to figure out how I wanted to set up my booth. I drew inspiration from a few Japanese tatting accounts and my setup from December. I think it’s going to look very nice!

On Monday there was an eclipse. I played around with my camera settings and got a few cool shots of it during the afternoon break at my day-job.

The biggest hurdle I’ve noticed for my finished pieces is people being unable to afford things. I definitely want to be paid for the amount of time I put into things, so I won’t sell myself short and earn less than minimum wage for my work, despite it being a form of meditation for me. I’ve been brainstorming how to make more kinds of pieces while keeping a pair of earrings under $30. Needless to say, the pieces feel extremely simplistic, more then I prefer to make, but the designs are still attractive.

I also put in my two weeks at the day job on Monday. It’s been great working there all these years, and I’m going to miss everyone, but I got an offer I can’t refuse. The beat up Ouija board mint tin I’ve been using over the past four or so years has become delightfully weathered, but I don’t want to risk accidentally antagonizing any of my new coworkers with it during lunch breaks(a great time to tat!), so I switched to another tin I found a few months ago. The cotton candy mints are actually really good, too!

I also got my tattoo touched up! It needs at least another pass, as it’s a cover-up. I know, in many circles, talking about and showing off tattoos can be seen as “distasteful” but I honestly don’t care that much. When Melissa showed me the design, I almost cried with happiness. She was so nervous that I wouldn’t like it, but it’s so much better than I hoped for from anyone in the area. If you want a lace tattoo, definitely hit up Melissa at The Mad Tatter in Salisbury, Maryland. I’ll get her card or personal website when I go for my next touch-up(she was in the middle of tattooing when I thought of it, and we both forgot by the time she had my arm securely protected).

Wildwood Lavender Farm also did a little vendor spotlight on my work for Bloom Fest in June! There’s a new design coming that will only be released when the festival starts!
