Weekly Update: Donuts, Chokers, Resin, Lasers, Etsy, and Needles

This week has been one of the busiest in my LIFE!

I started off the week with the grand idea of finally making a lace donut. Things did not go as planned. It’s now on the backburner.

Also, on Sunday, my Gran and I found a neat little shop, all themed around the macabre. Over an hour and a half, I whipped up the lace for a little choker, inspired by the place.

Tuesday, being assailed by insomnia, I decided to call it’s bluff and got up at 4:30 am. I figured it was the perfect time to get started on making resin pendants! I ran into some technical difficulties, so they’re also paused. I’ll re-examine them on Sunday.

I also learned the basics of using the laser engraver at the makerspace! The next evening, I went to the makerspace again, and with a bit of help, I have the start of a sign. If I get a chance to finish it up before the May festival, it’ll go on my table!

I wanted to thank my boss and his wife for all the lovely years working for/with him(and later her), so I made these to put in a thank you card. It slowed down my progress on the show’s jewelry a little bit, but was well worth it. It’s official, I’m no longer a manual machinist. I’m glad I’ve been shifting my mindset to seperate my day-job from my personal identity. While I love machining, it would have made moving on when the opportunity presented itself more difficult than it needed to be.

I finally photographed all the completed lace pieces and started to  reconfigure the Etsy shop! Right now, it’s a bit disorganized, but it’ll shape up nicely soon.

Lastly, I’ve been tatting so much over the past few weeks that my hands have been feeling a touch stiff. I want to avoid any long-term issues, so, after four years, I pulled the needle out, and needle tatted a few motifs to continue lacemaking but with different hand motions. I remembered how much puffier and soft needle tatted lace looks, but seeing it in action again stressed me out. I’ve grown to love the crispness of shuttle tatted lace so much more. That said, the needle tatted earrings will still be finished, they just need a bit of extra work, ironing, stiffening, the whole nine yards. It’s worth it to keep my hands healthy.
